Academic short courses offer adults and working professionals the opportunity to learn from field experts who will share their knowledge and the latest research being conducted at Rensselaer. Courses are offered in a short, intensive format, to minimize the time away from work and provide Continuing Education Units certifying course completion. The following courses wlll be offered in Summer 2006:
Solid State Lighting - E. Fred Schubert
This course presents the history, operating principles, fabrication process, and applications of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with particular emphasis on solid-state lighting applications. The course provides an overview of LED fundamentals, design, and fabrication techniques. This course is intended for scientists, engineers, technicians, and managers working on light-emitting diodes, solid-state lighting, and LED application areas.

Engineering Project Management - Mohamed Aboul-Seoud
This course is intended to give students an understanding of current techniques of Project Management. The course provides an overview of project screening and selection, multi-criteria methods for evaluation, WBS, CPM, and PERT, project budget, project control, resource management, and computer support for project management. This course is intended for working professionals dealing with budget and/or scheduling aspects of projects.

Reliability Engineering Data Analysis - Pasqualle Sullo
An intensive, self-contained presentation of statistical methods for analyzing data from life tests of electronic, mechanical, and structural components. Students will learn basic statistical models for describing failure behavior, simple, but powerful, graphical methods for estimating model parameters, and more advanced methods, including accelerated testing models and methods for analyzing data from such tests. To perform these analyses, students will use the MINITAB statistical package extensively.

This course is intended for working professional engineers, graduate students who need statistical methods for research, and/or undergraduate students wishing to enhance job or internship potential. Students should have taken an introductory statistics course. For those without this prerequisite or who wish a review, a one-day overview course in basic statistics will be given.

Introduction to Myers Briggs Type Indicator® - Linda McCloskey & Christine Allard
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®) is a tool that reflects an individual's work style behavior preferences. Participants will take the MBTI® and then experience a series of activities which highlight the main components of the theory/tool. The benefits of the MBTI® include: increased self-awareness, understanding personality differences, learning how to leverage differences, and understanding different communication styles. This course can be used as a team building tool and is intended for all working professionals where team productivity is essential.

Introduction to CAD/CAM Technologies
This two-week introduction to various CAD/CAM technologies will include basic introduction to digital design and 3d modeling environments, leading into various CAD/CAM fabrication and output technologies. Production equipment to be explored include Laser Cutter, CNC Mill, Z*Core 3D Printer, and ABS Plastic 3D Printer. This course is intended as an introduction to mid career professionals and prospective graduate students of architecture who may not have experience in these areas.
