Gamut Art: Viruses

Abstract

Gamut Art is a new art form using out of gamut colors in between CMYK and RGB. Gamut Art produces rhythmical feeling and three dimensional atmospheres on the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor screen, and it is an experiment art depicting an optical illusion of the in gamut color of the CRT monitor, but the out of gamut color in CMYK production. Gamut art is another way of artistic expression using the CRT technology. Gamut art not only extends the range of the digital art, but also establishes a new palette color and visuality. My goal is to create significant digital piece that has not defined yet. As we are the generation between the pop culture and the digital culture, the CRT technology inspires me to create a new art form which expresses the gap culture in between. As CMYK represent the pop culture and RGB presents the digital culture, gamut colors in between RGB and CMYK represent the culture in between the pop culture and the digital culture

Gamut is the total rage of colors reproduced by a device, such as a printer, a scanner, and a monitor. Colors outside of a gamut cannot be reproduced by a certain device. As a typical CMYK gamut is generally smaller than RGB gamut, colors between CMYK gamut and RGB gamut are used to realize the new digital expression using three dimensional space and an optical illusion. High saturation colors are selected to realize the gamut art. High saturation colors are in gamut of the OCR monitor screen, but they are out of gamut of the print production. The temperature and the contrast among colors are also an important key to realize three dimensional atmospheres.
